The DataKirk and Civic Digits are combining forces to inspire young people to examine and explore being safe online and offline at the same time.
Using Civic Digits’ ‘data driven actor’, … a robot that expresses data emotionally, we’ll be working with a group of young people from The DataKirk to discover what stories they want to tell. Their work will be performed by professional actors, and the Data Driven Actor robots they have designed and programmed.
The DataKirk and Civic Digits hope this is the beginning of a great collaboration that will improve young people’s opportunities to be safe online and inspire them to pursue careers in the data and digital workforce.

In Autumn 2021, we worked with pupils from Leith Academy to make a ‘data driven actor’: a robot created from VizBlocks to express the emotions of characters in a story written and devised by them.
The pupils designed their robots and programmed them to perform emotional reactions to data. They learned some coding skills to tell their own stories about living continuously on and off line at the same time: to explore the good and bad ways people act differently online.
This project was part of Civic Digits’ Artist Residency as part of Edinburgh International Festival’s residency in Leith Academy.
In the next stage of Data Driven Actor, we want to develop the work created with Leith Academy pupils and EIF to make this into a public performance. A show by bad robot actors about bad human online Actors. What crimes will be committed and will the pupils bring them to justice or let them go free? Watch this space!
